Resources for drug, alcohol or other addiction concerns:

  • Alcohol Concern - Acts as the national umbrella body for 500 local agencies tackling alcohol-related harm and offering help to the families and friends of those with alcohol related problems.
  • Alcoholics Anonymous - A fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.
  • Gamblers Anonymous  - A fellowship of men and women who have joined together to do something about their own gambling problem and to help other compulsive gamblers do the same.
  • Sick Doctors Trust - Provision of early intervention and treatment for doctors suffering from addiction to alcohol or other drugs.
  • British Doctors and Dentists Group - A support society for doctors and dentists who are recovering, or wish to recover, from addiction/dependency on alcohol or other drugs. The confidentially of all group members is strictly retained. Regular meeting groups in Scotland, Wales and England. The BDDG also has family groups to support the loved ones of the sick doctor or dentist.

  • Cruse Bereavement Care - A charity offering bereavement support online and by phone. 
  • Bereavement support for parents & their families - The Compassionate Friends (TCF) is a charitable organisation of bereaved parents, siblings and grandparents dedicated to the support and care of other similarly bereaved family members who have suffered the death of a child or children of any age and from any cause.
  • HEE Bereavement Support - HEE support line and hub for bereavement.  
  • Dying matter - A hospice UK initiative to share stories about bereavement. 
  • Grief - Information on the 5 stages of grief. 
  • The Good Grief Trust - A hub for finding local resources for bereavement support.

Resources for finances:

  • The Cameron Fund - The Fund is a charity for doctors who are, or have been, general practitioners, and for their dependents. It offers help in times of poverty, hardship or distress. The Fund aims to meet the needs of its beneficiaries in the fullest and most practical ways possible.
  • BMA Charities  - helps all doctors, and their dependents, and medical students in times of financial crisis.
  • Royal Medical Benevolent Fund (RMBF) - Depending on individual needs and circumstances, RMBF is able to provide grants, loans, information, advice, clothes parcels and payments to assist with domestic and financial crises or help with childcare and other costs.
  • Royal Medical Foundation - A medical benevolent charity assists UK medical practitioners and their dependents who find themselves in financial hardship.
  • Citizens Advice Bureau  - Provides free, confidential, impartial and independent advice on a limitless range of subjects, including debt, benefits, housing, legal matters, employment, immigration and consumer issues. CAB are open to everyone regardless of race, gender, sexuality or disability.

  • Victim Support Line - The national charity which helps people affected by crime. Provides free and confidential support to help you deal with your experience, whether or not you report the crime.
  • Women's Aid - The key national charity working to end domestic violence against women and children; supporting a network of over 500 domestic and sexual violence services across the UK.

  • Surviving Work in Health - an interesting on-line portal created by the Tavistock & Portman NHS Trust for health care workers.
  • The Doctors Paradox- rediscovering passion for healthcare. Founded by an American Cardiologist who has spent the last years researching burnout in doctors internationally. The site has a number of interesting reading materials as well as excellent podcasts with doctors across the world, including a number of UK doctors about how they bring balance to their lives.
  • Physician Burnout - a website set up by GP, Dr Kate Little, after her own experience of burnout.
  • Civility Saves Lives - Health professionals providing a collective voice for the importance of respect, professional courtesy and valuing each other; aiming to raise awareness of the negative impact that rudeness (incivility) can have in healthcare, so that we can understand the impact of our behaviours.

All the Royal College websites have a signposting page on their site for members looking for additional support. 

The Royal College of Psychiatry

Have access to free, confidential support and advice for members, trainee members and associates of the Royal College of Psychiatrists who find themselves in difficulty or in need of support personally or professionally. 

  • Start Well - a support initiative for psychiatrists in their first five years as a Consultants or Locum Consultant. 

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists

  • toolkit has been created about bullying and undermining in the workplace in collaboration with the Royal College of Midwives.
